Chika Onwuamah is the Head of Microbiology Department, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research.
He is an experienced Team Lead with a demonstrated history of working in the research industry. Skilled in Epidemiology, Life Sciences, Microscopy, Science, and Genomics.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology (Parasitology) from the University of Nigeria, as well as both a Master’s degree and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Cell Biology and Genetics from the University of Lagos.
Chika’s career journey is inspiring. From 2003 to 2004, he served as a graduate teaching assistant at the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, University of Lagos. From 2001 to 2015, he worked as a Research Fellow at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, gradually climbing the career ladder to his current position as the head of the Microbiology Department.
He has made significant contributions to numerous research publications and has received several awards, including NIMR’s pioneer Young Scientist award (2011), China CDC ModPad Plus Fellowship (2019), Emory-Nigeria Short-term Fellow (2019), and the NIMR Innovator’s Award (2019). During three-month research at China CDC Beijing, I developed multiplex isothermal assays diagnosing top ten pathogens causing febrile illness.
